VIJAY FIGHTS FOR UNDERTRIAL RIGHTS
VIjay Gopal an anti corruption activist from Hyderabad, has claimed to have waited long and has gladly announced through his twitter handle, that his petition addressing to National Human Rights Commission has been accepted to create a central website pertaining to prisoners as under trials in India, so their rights are protected.
Vijay is the founder of ForumAgainstCorruption picking up issues of corruption and socio economic problems which bothers the common man.
Responding to the petition filed by Vijay, the NHRC has directed the Ministry of Electronics & IT and National Informatics Centre to create a cluster of informational website of jailed under trials that shall be publicly accessible like Cowin website.
On 15th Aug 2020, Vijay Protested at Koti X Roads, against arbitrary extensions by TS High Court.
The Scope of this project is to computerize and integrate all the activities related to prison and prisoner management in the jail.
This central portal will provide the vital information about the inmates especially under trials with more than 90 days, lodged in the prisons, in real time environment not only to the prison officials but shall be accessible to the public.
On inquiring Vijay about the difference between the existing National Prisons Information Portal and the current one he petitioned, he said that the current NPIP does not show you the ones in Jail Under trial Status.
If the under trial is lodged in jail for more than 90 days, by default the accused is entitled for bail. However, Jails are packed with under trials who are not granted bail even after 90 days, which is their right.
Right of Accused To Be Released on Bail If Investigation Not Completed Within Prescribed Period
An indefeasible right accrues in favour of the accused for being released on bail if the police fails to complete the probe and no charge-sheet is filed within the period of 90 days or 60 days as the case may be, under Section 167 (2) of Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.
