Spare educational institutes on lake land till end of academic year: Parents’ plea to HYDRAA

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is under pressure from an unexpected quarter. They have received several requests from parents to spare schools and colleges that have allegedly encroached upon lakes from their demolition drive as the academic year was in progress.

Among institutions reportedly listed for demolition are Fatima Owaisi College run by Salar-e-Millat Educational Trust of AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, Anurag Educational Institutions owned by BRS MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and Malla Reddy Group of Institutions run by the family of ex minister and BRS MLA Ch Malla Reddy. Sources said these colleges have been identified for allegedly encroaching lake land.
HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath confirmed that several parents have approached him, pleading for postponement of demolition until the end of the academic year.
“Parents are coming in groups, petitioning me to spare the institutions. They are concerned about their wards’ academic year,” he said.

While no decision has been made y et, Ranganath indicated that a policy decision would be taken at the govt level soon.
Sources in HYDRAA said even if the institutions were temporarily exempted, the structures will have to be pulled down during summer holidays, thereby giving the managements time to relocate.
Satellite images from 2014, 2017 and 2024, provided by Team Climate Congress and social activist Lubna Sarwath, reveal the extent of encroachments. “Salar-e-Millat Trust constructed the buildings in Salkam Cheruvu in Chandrayangutta,” Sarwath
. An FIR was lodged against Anurag Educational Institutions for allegedly encroaching on Nadam Cheruvu in Venkatapur village. The institution was accused of illegally constructing buildings within the buffer zone of the lake.
Malla Reddy institutions have come under scrutiny for obstructing the flow of water from Chinna Bandam Cheruvu, Lingam Cheruvu and Bhajanshai Kunta. Satellite images have indicated that encroachments began before 2010 with the construction of Malla Reddy Dental College for Women, followed by other institutions on encroached channels.
