Telangana Greenlights Second Phase of Hyderabad Metro Project with Rs 24,269 Crore Budget
The Telangana government has sanctioned the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, approving a massive budget of Rs. 24,269 crore for five new corridors totaling 76.4 kilometers. The ambitious project will be developed as a joint venture between the Telangana government and the Government of India, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution in the fast-growing city.
The new metro lines, announced in Government Order from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, will extend Hyderabad’s existing network, which has already proved popular among commuters. The Phase-I metro, spanning 69 km, has become the world’s largest metro project implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, serving around 5 lakh passengers daily.
Phase-II Metro Corridors Breakdown:
1.Nagole to Shamshabad RGIA (Airport Corridor) - 36.8 km
2.Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis - 11.6 km
3.MGBS to Chandrayangutta (Old City Corridor) - 7.5 km
4.Miyapur to Patancheru - 13.4 km
5.LB Nagar to Hayat Nagar - 7.1 km
These five corridors, part of the project’s “Part A,” represent a total of 76.4 km and are intended to serve key locations, expanding connectivity throughout the city. An additional 40 km extension (Corridor IX), from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to Fourth City (Skill University), is currently under survey and planning.
Funding Details:
The estimated cost breakdown includes Telangana’s share at Rs. 7,313 crore (30%), the central government’s contribution of Rs. 4,230 crore (18%), and international loans, including from JICA, ADB, and NDB, covering Rs. 11,693 crore (48%). The remaining 4% (Rs. 1,033 crore) will come from a PPP component.
The Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) will oversee the project’s development, with administrative clearances granted following comprehensive reviews of updated traffic data. The objective of the metro expansion is not only to serve Hyderabad’s commuters but also to promote equitable growth across all city areas.
Next Steps:
The Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited has been instructed to proceed with implementing the Phase-II corridors, a significant step forward in Hyderabad’s urban transit infrastructure.
