Nallamala Diamond : Rural innovator Gagan

Nallamala Diamond : Rural innovator Gagan

Fourteen-year-old Gaganchandra has designed a hybrid three-in-one bicycle that can run on solar power, battery, and petrol when needed. His innovation allows the bike to travel up to 35 km on battery power without any cost, and with the help of solar energy, it can operate throughout the day.

To build this hybrid bicycle, he modified a regular cycle by installing an electric battery, a solar panel, and a hub motor. He also integrated a digital speedometer, a central lock system, navigation, and a GPS tracking system, enabling real-time location tracking from anywhere. The bicycle is equipped with voice control features, allowing users to manage music and calls through mobile voice commands and Alexa. Gaganchandra even built the control box himself and sourced the required components online. The total cost of his project was approximately ₹20,000, and he aims to further reduce the cost in the future.

Gouramoni Gaganchandra, a class 9 student from Balmuru Mandal in Nagar Kurnool district, which lies in the Nallamala forest region, recently won third prize at the Southern India Science Fair held in Puducherry. The competition saw participation from 250 students across various states. His selection for the upcoming National Science Fair in February is a testament to his ingenuity.

Gaganchandra’s mother, Nagarani, recalls his passion for innovation from an early age. “Since second grade, my son has been crafting items using discarded materials. He would create lights, motors, and coolers from waste items. Our house was small, so I often had to dispose of them, sometimes out of frustration. But now, seeing everyone appreciate his work, I feel proud and happy,” she says.
