Telangana Extends Retirement Age of University Faculty to 65 Years

Will they ever retire?

Telangana Extends Retirement Age of University Faculty to 65 Years

The Telangana government has issued orders extending the retirement age of university teaching faculty from 60 to 65 years. The GO, was issued by the Higher Education (UE) Department , following recommendations from the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE).

According to the order, the extension applies to regular teachers working in state universities under the administrative control of the Higher Education Department who are drawing UGC scale of pay. The move claims to address faculty shortages, improve academic standards, and ensure the retention of senior faculty to maintain NAAC, NBA, and NIRF rankings.

The TGCHE Secretary had highlighted that no major faculty recruitment has taken place in Telangana’s state universities since 2013, leading to an acute shortage of teachers. This, in turn, has affected the quality of education and research output. The council recommended increasing the superannuation age to retain experienced faculty and sustain academic standards.

The decision aligns with UGC Regulations 2018, which allow for an enhanced retirement age for university teachers.
