The biggest vaccination drive on the planet

Hyderabad : 11/01/2021

The biggest vaccination drive on the planet is going to take place as the Government of India has approved 2 vaccines for emergency use.

1.3 billion people will be vaccinated in phases, beginning with our frontline health workers, the police and those above the age of 50 before the rest of the population.

While India’s Drugs Controller General, VG Somani, has hailed the vaccines as “100% safe”, the media has reported that some of our country’s eminent scientists, medical experts and health watchdogs are shocked at the “hasty authorisation” of the locally-made vaccine. The clinical trials that will prove its success haven’t been completed. The government has decided not to release this data.

As a citizen who may be vaccinated some day, you have every right to ask questions, seek answers and clarity. This is a matter that affects you and the people you care about.

We need to ask the Government of India to do the following:

1. Data on the safety of the vaccine to be publicised.

2. Funds allocated for vaccination, including price of each dose, has to be declared publicly.

3. Insurance cover for all those being vaccinated.

4. Ensure legal rights and protections for those taking a drug that is still in trial stage

5. Have a public database of adverse effects both short and long term
6. Enable self reporting
7. Declare a compensation and free treatment policy
8. Provide free legal aid to those who feel their adverse reaction is not addressed
9. Declare a limit of adverse effects and a mark of lack of efficacy beyond which the vaccine will be pulled out
10. Dissolve policy of legal indemnity to manufacturers
11. Form a committee of civil society members to monitor the process

12. At no point should the vaccine be made mandatory or linked to any schemes/ public facilities that deprive non-vaccinated people of the right or freedom guaranteed by Indian Constitution.
