Big Development in Rohit Vemula case:

Cyberabad police have closed the case pertaining to the death of Rohith Vemula at Hyderabad Central University.

Gachibowli police stated that due to lack of evidence, the case has been closed. A final report has been filed in court. Former HCU Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao has been exonerated in the case.

Rohith Vemula killed himself in his hostel room on January 17, 2016.

The death of Rohit Vemula in 2016 sparked a nationwide protest demanding protection for students from marginal groups in India’s academic space. Calling it an “institutional murder”, Bahujan groups demanded action against the university administration.

Prevention of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) atrocities Act case was filed regarding the incident. The incident not only led to unrest in HCU but also in universities across the country.
