medicines made of chalk powder

Uttarakhand Pharma factory sold medicines made of chalk powder to Telangana

The drugs had labels from reputed companies like Cipla, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Alkem, and Aristo, but they actually contained chalk powder instead.

Telangana's Drug Control Administration and Hyderabad police dismantled an interstate network operating from a pharmaceutical factory named Nectar Herbs and Drugs, located in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand.

Accused admitted to manufacturing counterfeits of Augmentin - 625, Clavum - 625, Omnicef-O 200, and Montair - LC, and sending them through courier to various states.

Officials stated that the factory was supplying chalk powder to at least half a dozen states.

The network was busted after a raid at Malakpet revealed a carton of 27,200 tablets of spurious antibiotic MPOD - 200 tablets worth ₹7.43 lakh. Additionally, a man was caught selling the stock near Moosaram Bagh.

Officers seized 38,350 tablets (3,835 strips) of counterfeit Omnicef-O 200 Tablets (Cefixime Tablets IP 200 mg), 60.27 kilograms of orange-coloured tablets, 65.27 kilograms of white-coloured tablets, 30.18 kilograms of counterfeit Omnicef-O 200 Aluminium Foil, and 33.45 kilograms of counterfeit Omnicef-O 200 Cartons (packing material)

This organized network included several individuals: buyers who placed orders for the spurious drugs, distributors, individuals who arranged fake labels, those involved in manufacturing and packing the drugs, and the CEO of the unit that allowed the manufacturing of spurious drugs.

Five people, including the manufacturers Sachin Kumar and Vishad Kumar, have been arrested.

This interstate operation is named "Operation JAI".
